... score a goal on a breakaway?
Dani Schultz, Morris/Benson Area
(The senior girls hockey forward is the area’s all-time scoring leader with 60 goals and 47 assists.)
As I'm skating in on the goalie I know that it is only between me and the goalie now. I am thinking that I had better score because my team (Morris/Benson Area) is counting on me. And I know that all eyes are on me and the goalie ... my team is watching me and the goalie’s team is watching her. And they are all cheering for their team's player. As I am skating closer to the net, I look at the goalie to see if there is any holes that I can hit or if I should try to deke her out. If I can tell that there is no hole for me to shoot the puck through, then I know that I am going to have to deke her out. Now, I need to decide quick what deke I should do. Should I go to my forehand or to my backhand? If I can tell that she is farther over on my forehand, I know that I am going to go to my backhand. One deke that way and back to the other and there it is in the back of the net.”
