Montevideo levee good

Duininck Companies Inc. began moving 2,000 cubic yards of material Wednesday to raise portions of the main levee in Montevideo. The work will assure the entire length of the main levee is able to protect against a 23-foot-high level of water on the Minnesota River, with two feet of freeboard. That would provide the city with protection against a 1997-level flood, where waters reached 24 feet high. The work is being done as a precaution, City Manager Steve Jones said. Current projections by the National Weather Service show the river rising to an elevation of 17.9 feet Sunday.
