GIlman: A place in history
Dr. Donald Gilman is well-known in the community, but he also has a place in local history. He was an eyewitness to Willmar’s infamous bank robbery. On July 15, 1930, while walking downtown, Gilman found himself front and center as robbers fled the Bank of Willmar. Upon exiting the bank, the robbers were fired upon by a jewelry store owner and a local man who borrowed a rifle from the downtown hardware store. Two women were injured by stray rounds, according to Tribune archives, and Gilman was shot in the heel. The robbers were never apprehended.
