Letter: Frittering away tax dollars
So, Rep. Juhnke, if I understand this right, we only vote no on the bonding bill if it doesn’t include the pork that we want? What about all of the pork that the metro would get if we vote yes on the bonding bill, only because it includes our pork?By Alysia Heidecker, Willmar , March 18, 2010
Letter: Saving the lives of the unborn
CBS Television aired an excellent news broadcast on colon cancer and the actions needed to save lives. I am sure an equally in-depth broadcast on abortion would also save human life.By Charles Volz, Raymond , March 18, 2010
Letter: Learning from Pawlenty
Tim Pawlenty is an interesting fellow. We can learn a lot from him. He is quite intelligent. He shows considerable political skill in getting his way, despite the fact that the majority of those voting chose someone else in both of his gubernatorial elections. He now spends his time anywhere other than Minnesota with visions dancing in his head of life in a big white mansion in Washington, D.C., at the center of the very government that he says he hates.

Letter: Apply the sales tax fairly
One thing the state of Minnesota should do to both increase its revenue and help level the playing field for existing business is to close the existing loopholes in the sales tax law.

Letter: Abraham didn’t tell a lie
This is a somewhat different subject than most you publish but I have as a Christian always been troubled by the statement that Abraham lied when he said Sarah was his sister. This past Sunday I heard a well-known television church service that made the statement.

Letter: Don’t lose music program
I have great concerns with these budget cuts that are currently happening. I’ve been following the paper and have seen the threat to the music program come up time after time. Knowing that any part of the music program of Willmar is being threatened to be cut makes me upset and is outrageous! Willmar, for years, has been known for how awesome their music program is. The passion and enjoyment that students, staff and the whole town of Willmar get from this program are truly incredible. The biggest thing that contributes to the success of our music program is our teachers.

Teacher has worked wonders
I remember my sister not wanting to go to pep band or wanting to be in the marching band when she was in high school, which was about eight years ago. It was no fun to her and not a lot of people joined in.

A plan for rural survival
It will soon be clear that our economy won’t replace most of the good jobs shipped overseas. This may become even clearer at about the same time that the Chinese take our credit cards away. And, if the peak oil people are correct, then we will need a plan.

Letter; We all should buy American
Buy American. Buy American. Buy American. As we grow older it seems we develop an exasperating habit of repeating ourselves, and aren’t aware of it until a friend reminds us.

Letter: Health summit was a failure
Referring to the health care summit on Feb. 25: I listened to most of it and I noticed the media seized on a “testy” exchange between Sen. John McCain and President Obama as the highlight of the discussion.

Letter: The state of schooling
The current state of schooling is laughable. The biggest problem is that it is not effective (most students don’t remember most of what they learn.)

Letter: Taxes and representation
Since the days of the Boston Tea Party, Americans (colonists in those days) have despised, indeed most seem disposed to hate taxes. While pondering this historical event and its possible effect on current dispositions, it is important to recall the protest was sending money across the Atlantic without representation in the imposition. Of course, the rejoinder to this observation would be, we don’t like or accept the result even though imposed by our elected representatives.

Letter: Music cuts would be devastating
The Willmar Senior High Band Department has received a great deal of attention in the last four years. In a three-year span, the WHS Marching Band went from being non-competitive to winning first-place trophies against top schools.

Letter: Schools, music need support
My name is Andrew Schulz, and I’m a sophomore music education major at the University of Minnesota-Morris, as well as a graduate of the Willmar public school system.

Letter: Music program under threat
It has recently come to my attention that the budget cuts in the Willmar School System are yet again threatening the music program.
