What Does It Take to Be an Expert?
I have no letters after my name. Okay, officially I have a B.A., which in today's climate stands less for Bachelor of Arts as it does for Buy Additional -- credits, tuition, college time -- leading t...

DIY Fabric Animal Decor
Our second bathroom is the kid's bathroom. When I first moved in to our house, the room had been painted a teal and dark pink color to match the fish-designed shower curtain. Personally, the color com...

The Advent Grinch
Yesterday was Christmas! It was a great day for the family, a great day of travel, and a great Christmas service at church. The sermon was fantastic - it always is in my eyes (my huz is the pastor, bu...

faith fridays: messages in the sky
I've got a fixation that I'm having a hard time shaking. When it takes hold -- and it often does while the five kids and I are cruising along in the minivan -- everyone knows what's coming. The teens ...

Put Away That DDT
A recent letter to the editor in the Grand Forks Herald regarding environmental chemicals and their effects on our healthreally piqued my interest. I happen to know several families in the region affe...

Letter: Keep election process honest
In my opinion, in his letter of Feb. 3, Graden West managed to spew out another unsubstantiated fact. It’s no big secret that a few shortcomings exist in our electoral process that can make it susceptible to voter fraud. One of the shortcomings could have been corrected years ago, if Congress would have enacted a photo ID law.

Letter: When church and state collide
If and when the constitutional amendment is adopted making holy matrimony safe from gay marriages as conservative Catholics and Protestant fundamentalists propose, what penalty for breaking the law are they suggesting? How many Protestant ministers, United Church of Christ, Unitarian/Universalist, ELC Lutheran, Presbyterian, Episcopal priests and ministers will be hauled off to jail in handcuffs away from their pulpits for continuing the practice because they see it as a basic human right? It will be Prohibition all over again with sentences meted out to prominent clergy causing civil strife not too different from that amendment that fundamentalists supported and Catholics fought as an unjust law curtailing their drinking habits.

Letter; Protecting the right to vote
Have there been any cases of voter fraud in Minnesota? Answer — 0.009 percent. With only that tiny amount it is obviously not worth the amount of money it will take to put voter ID on the ballot. Why would anyone, specifically Sen. Joe Gimse and other Republicans, want to place it up for a vote?

Letter: Investments and taxes
Investment income is taxed at a lower rate because the government wants people to invest their savings (yes, this money has already been taxed at least once) in businesses of all sorts. Since the failure rate of businesses is fairly high, any investor might lose all his money at any time. Therefore, when a profit is actually made, the tax rate is lower to acknowledge the risk that was taken in earning the money.

Letter: Can’t have it both ways
This is in response to Barbara Edwards’ letter on Jan. 24. By making four appointments, Obama did get two bureaus working. The question is, was this action legal? When these appointments were made the Democratic-controlled Senate was in pro forma session, not in recess.

Letter: E-Verify would help workers
In his recent commentary, “Rubio would be lousy VP choice for Romney,” Ruben Navarrette insinuates that support for E-Verify alienates Hispanic voters. But Hispanics support E-Verify.

Letter: No home run for Obama
I watched Jan. 24 as President Obama hit one over the left field fence.

Letter: An ol’ country boy’s advice
Looks like election season is about to open again, so thought I’d sharpen the old pencil stub and jot a word to you folks what want me to vote for you.

Letter: Nothing learned since 9/11
In response to Chad Ridler (Public Forum, Jan. 23), I said 80 percent of the world’s poinsettias were grown in Africa, and then shipped to Holland. The United States is not the whole world like some people think. Also Mexico has a reputation for being one of the lowest paying countries. They are probably paid less yet. Why do you think we have such a problem with all of them trying to enter this country, just like Europe does with people from Africa, etc.?

Letter: Caucus night is coming!
As the Republican Party co-chair for Kandiyohi County, I wanted to remind readers that Tuesday, Feb. 7, is caucus night for Republicans in Minnesota.

Letter: Do your part to protect lakes
After reading the article “Kandiyohi County among leaders in enforcement” dealing with aquatic invasive species in the Jan. 14 paper, I felt proud of our county for stepping up the enforcement but couldn’t help feeling defeated when I realized how poorly other counties are doing in the fight to control invasive aquatics.

Letter: A happy ending for lost dog
Thank you, thank you, thank you. There are no words to describe the joy over the finding of Lord, the missing dog.

Letter: Hate-filled?
Regarding Harlan Broers’ letter to the editor in the Jan. 17 paper, I’m going to borrow a page from Jeff Foxworthy, to say that you must also be hate-filled yourself when you accuse someone of doing something without checking your facts.

Letter: Welcome home, Lord!
It was such good news to hear on (Jan. 20) that the missing Schnauzer mix Lord, had been found.

Letter: Happy to see news of found dog
