Letter: Clarifying state budget facts
Inaccuracies and distortion of the facts are an unfortunate fact of life during campaign season. While I believe most people understand this and dismiss these claims as campaign rhetoric, there are some that must be set straight. A recent letter about our state budget is one example.
Last session, we learned our state was facing a significant budget deficit. As mandated by our state constitution, the new DFL majority in the House balanced the budget through a responsible combination of cuts and better use of state revenue. While it was necessary to use some of our state budget reserve dollars, we succeeded in protecting most of it.
As a result, instead of the half-billion dollar deficit the letter writer claims we left, we actually finished the 2008 session almost half a billion dollars ahead.
