Letter: Hope for troubled times

Our senior citizens worked hard most of their life and saved what they could so they could live a good and independent lifestyle when they retired. They didn't want to be a burden to anyone, especially their family.

Now in our old age we have a new cause to give us worry because our country is facing rough times. Our government has failed us and a long-lasting, deep and difficult recession is predicted. We are already feeling its effects. The elderly have already been through a great depression and have felt its consequences.

Once again they wonder and worry if they'll be able to remain recession-proof and independent and able to survive another depression with their pride intact. Everyone will have to tighten their belts and change their lifestyles.

Our city government is already making changes. Our businesses are hurting and people are losing their livelihoods. Our cost of living is too high for our incomes and our country is trillions in debt. We all know where the blame lies and we all want changes in government in Washington now.

We now have a new president who has promised us hope for America. He has a good chance to become one of our country's best ever and be thought of as Abraham Lincoln has these many years if he keeps his promises to all of us so we can rebuild America to a safe, sane and prosperous nation. If he makes America his No. 1 priority and keeps his eye on the lawmakers and lawbreakers in Washington as well as our tax money, he'll restore faith in the people and he'll get the help he will need to make us a great and safe nation again.

A great way to start is to make a change and put the tax pennies collected in the pockets of the already affluent and elite and give our hard-working taxpayers the tax dollars in their bank accounts because they have been the real contributors to America and are the backbone of it. It makes good sense now in our troubled times.
