Letter: The spirit of Christmas

Merry Christmas

These are the only proper two words for this time of year and became especially true for me on Dec. 12.

I was sitting in my big chair in my living room where I spend most of my time watching TV. Actually, I think, like most older, living-alone seniors like myself, we have the TV on for company more than the programming.

At any rate, all of a sudden, a whole line of vehicles came down my street and parked nearby. Then there was a large group of young people and some adults coming up my driveway. I opened my door and the whole group was gathered at my front step. I think someone said who they were and asked if they could sing some Christmas carols. I was so stunned by it all I don't know if I answered.

It was beautiful to hear their voices singing some of the old-time Christmas carols. Someone handed me a plate of homemade cookies, several sang out Merry Christmas, they all piled in their vehicles and were gone, like it never even happened.

I don't know who this came about, but to Active Acres 4-H club of Kandiyohi County, I thank you with all my heart. I wish you all a Merry Christmas and health and happiness for all your lives.

I will never forget, for the rest of my days, your taking the time to come to the front of this old man's home and do what you did for me.

Yes, Virginia, and yes, Charlie Brown, there is a Santa Claus.

Merry Christmas, everyone.
