Thunderstorms possible tonight, slight risk of severe weather for west central Minn.

WILLMAR — The National Weather Service has issued a hazardous weather outlook for today and tonight for portions of central and southern Minnesota.

The area includes Kandiyohi, Meeker, Swift, Chippewa, Renville, Lac qui Parle, Yellow Medicine, Pope, Stevens and Stearns counties.

According to the NWS office in Chanhassen, thunderstorms are possible late this afternoon and through tonight, with storms spreading from west to east. The slight risk of severe thunderstorms is from late this evening through the overnight hours. The primary hazard is large hail, with possible damaging winds and heavy rain.

There is a very small chance of isolated tornadoes.

The thunderstorm chances linger through Wednesday, then the weather pattern appears to be dry through the weekend.

The local forecast for Willmar includes a 30-percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 3 p.m. with a high temp of 86 today.

Tonight’s forecast shows that showers and thunderstorms are likely from 7 p.m. to midnight. The chance of precipitation is 60 percent with rainfall amounts of 0.25 to 0.5 of an inch.

Wednesday’s high temperature is expected to be 84 degrees, with a 30-percent chance of showers and thunderstorms before 1 p.m.
