Local shelter says don't forget about pets on a hot day

WILLMAR -- On a hot day like today, officials from the Hawk Creek Animal Shelter in Willmar say don't forget your four-legged friends.

Animals need access to plenty of water and shade. Keeping them indoors in the air conditioning is recommended, but if that's not possible, make sure pets have easy access to water and shade, says the shelter in a post today on its Facebook page.

Another idea from the shelter is to pick up a plastic kiddie pool for Rover to relax and cool down in.

And it is important to keep pets out of cars. Opening the windows of a car does not help. Temperatures inside a vehicle become deadly very quickly. The shelter says if you see a pet in stress, find the owners immediately or contact law enforcement.
