Apollo topples Willmar in 2OT

WILLMAR - Willmar's defense, the mainstay of its run to the top of the Central Lakes Conference boys soccer standings, experienced a small letdown as the Cardinals lost to St. Cloud Apollo 4-3 in double overtime Thursday.

"We had a decent offensive game, but our usual outstanding defense was not there," said Willmar coach Richard Courtney.

He also said Willmar lost two defenders in the first half - Andy Neis and Brad Leitch - which led to the performance.

The game was headed to a third overtime, but Apollo's Nate Orr found open space between Willmar's Danny King and the goal's net in the 89th minute, 60 seconds before the end of the period.

Josh Aslesen scored two goals for Willmar (7-3, 10-4). Joel Juni netted the other goal.
