Willmar blanks St. Cloud Apollo to open playoffs

WILLMAR -- The Willmar Cardinals breezed by St. Cloud Apollo 7-0 on Friday afternoon in the quarterfinals of the Section 8AA-South tennis playoffs.

The win puts the Cardinals (7-7) into the semifinal round at 1 p.m. Monday on Gold's Gym indoor courts in St. Cloud. Willmar meets the winner of the Little Falls and Becker match.

The Cardinals dominated the young Apollo team, especially at doubles where the three Willmar pairs lost only one game total.

Leslie Marcus-Allie Ellingson won 6-0, 6-0, Brittin Dahle-Eva Rodelius won 6-1, 6-0 and Haylee Thompson-Emily Kack won 6-0, 6-0.

Andrea Brown, Amanda Brown, Jenny Peterson and Sarah Paterson had similar matches at singles.

The match was played in sun and mild temperatures one day after losing the regular-season finale 4-3 at Alexandria -- a match played in a bitter wind with snow and the mercury near freezing.

The Eagles finished with out a win this season.

In a scheduling change, the 8AA-South final is now slated for Oct. 18 at a time to be announced.
