Solid outing advances Willmar tennis squad

ST. CLOUD -- The Willmar Cardinals beat Becker 5-2 Monday and will advance to the Section 8AA final four at 4 p.m. next Tuesday.

The Cardinals (8-8) will face the No. 1 seed to come out of the North. St. Cloud Tech, South's No. 1, advanced with its victory over Rocori, also at Gold's Gym yesterday.

Andrea Brown at 1-singles played a solid match to defeat Hannah Miller of Becker 6-2, 6-0. Amanda Bredeson lost 6-1, 7-5, though she rallied from 1-5 second set.

Jenny Peterson and Sarah Paterson both won in straight sets to give Willmar three singles points. The Bulldogs' have a top doubles team in Stacy Johnson-Shelly Stamper and they were able to outhit Allie Ellingson-Leslie Marcus 6-1, 6-1.

Eva Rodelius-Brittin Dahle needed to come up big at 2-doubles and they responded with a grinding 7-5, 5-7, 7-5 victory for the fourth point. Haylee Thompson-Emily Kack added another point at doubles with a solid outing, according to coach Erika Kath.

"Andrea is really playing good tennis right now," Kath added, "and it was good to see Jenny and Sarah come up with points today."

The Section 8AA-South individual tournament starts at 9 a.m. Thursday. Brown and Bredeson will represent Willmar in singles and Marcus-Ellingson, Rodelius-Dahle in doubles.
