Tennis: Redwood Valley tops LQPV/DB; advances to state

ST. PETER - Lac qui Parle Valley/Dawson-Boyd saw a state Class A tournament berth vanish for a second straight year, losing to Redwood Valley 4-3 in the Section 3A championship Tuesday in at Gustavus Adolphus.

The Eagles came into last year's title tilt undefeated, then had three players suffer injuries that led to a 4-3 loss.

This year, LQPV/DB stayed clear of physical ailments, but ran out of luck.

"It was pretty exciting to watch," said Eagles coach Dana Otto. "Nobody played horribly. It was a great match."

Redwood Valley topped MACCRAY 5-2 and LQPV/DB squeezed past New London-Spicer 4-3 in the semifinals earlier in the day.

The Cardinals advance to the state tournament, which will be held Oct. 26-29 at Nicollet Tennis Club in Minneapolis.

The section's individual tournament concludes Thursday.


Redwood Valley 4, LQPV/DB 3

The Eagles (23-2) got points at 1- and 2-singles from Madeline and Melanie Gail and 1-doubles from Whitney Hansen-Melanie Knutson.

Melanie Gail avenged an earlier loss to Anna Johnson with a 7-5, 6-4 win, but Redwood Valley gained crucial points in the lower singles matches. Sam Boushek, last year's No. 1 player for the Cardinals, topped Jenna Amundson 6-3, 1-6, 7-5 at 3-singles and Beth Maland came back from a 6-1 loss in the first game to the Eagles' Greta Vick to win 6-1, 7-5 at No. 4.

The Eagles squeezed out the win though Madeline Gail at 1-singles lost to Paula Beckermann 7-5, 6-0, only the second defeat all season for Gail.

Melanie Gail beat Alyssa Wachter (6-4, 6-4) for the second time, Wachter's onlyh losses all season.

The Eagles picked up two of the three points in doubles. Katie Brown-Kate Bredeck won 2-doubles 7-5, 7-6, rallying from 2-5 in the second set.

The Cardinals' Ana Johnson and Sam Boushek won close matches at 2-singles and 3-singles and also 2-doubles. Ashley Trulock at 4-singles and Christine Condon-Amanda Bonnema at 1-doubles won points for MACCRAY.

The Wolverines finished 18-5.
