Depleted Willmar tumbled by Tech

WILLMAR -- One short of a full lineup to begin the meet -- and the season, it only got worse for the Willmar Cardinals' gymnastics team Thursday.

Brooke Feichtinger, one of only two returning letterwinners for the Cardinals, wrenched her knee on her second vault and sat out the next three rotations with an ice pack on her right knee.

Willmar, which started the evening with four instead of five varsity competitors, finished with three gymnasts: junior Caitlin Cooreman and varsity novices Brooke Barrett and Bethany Pollock, both freshmen.

An outstanding St. Cloud Tech squad won the Central Lakes Conference meet 140.64-88.775. The Tigers are the defending conference champion.

Seniorless Willmar, low on numbers to start, didn't have Amanda Schwantes, a junior expected to be an important contributor but out for now with a back injury.

Adding to the numbers problem was a sophomore potential all-arounder who told Selchow on Monday that she had decided to quit the sport.

Bright spots for Willmar was Feightinger's first vault which rated an 8.75 score. Also, Coorman rallied on the beam with a strong routine without a fall for an 8.55 score.

The extent of Feichtinger's injury will be determined today.

The junior varsity team, also low on numbers, had only four girls competing last night.
