Willmar falls from pack
ST. CLOUD -- This was not Willmar's night.
Starting with the jump ball, St. Cloud Apollo bolted away from the visitors 7-0 and the Cardinals never could catch up, though they trailed just 21-18 at halftime.
The Central Lakes Conference outcome, 55-45, put the Eagles a full game up on the Cardinals. Both teams had come in 4-2.
Willmar lost junior wing Matt Seehusen to injury, possibly a high-ankle sprain which could keep him out of the line-up several weeks.
"We played tentative to begin with," said coach Steve Grove. "Turnovers also hurt us early. We just never got into the flow."
Apollo's multiple defenses had a lot to do with keeping Willmar off balance. The Eagles were also more physical.
"They took it to us tonight," concluded the Willmar coach.
Senior guard Nick Simon led the Eagles with 19 points. The Eagles were also helped by the return of rugged junior post Seth Norine (eight points), who had been out of the lineup two weeks with a knee bruise.
Kyle Townswick led all scorers with 20 points. He drained four 3-pointers. Ryan Hagemeyer and Matt Roisum were next with six points apiece.
