MBA rallies past Willmar for 8th win in a row, 4-2

WILLMAR -- Morris/-Benson Area lived up to its nickname in the third period at the Willmar Civic Center.

In the first varsity meeting of the two programs, the Storm scored three times while holding the Willmar Cardinals to three shots on goal in the third period to grab a 4-2 victory Thursday.

Willmar led 2-1 at the first break on shorthanded goals by Scot Gregg and Tyler Wahl, trumping a powerplay goal by BKMS center Mitch Kleespies.

The score stayed that way until Jake Knutson filtered a down-ice pass to a wide-open Mack Grunig, who broke in on Jeff Reed and whistled a snap shot to the net from the left dot.

The goal tied the score 2-2 at 2:32. Jordan Lee followed with another break-in, using a Willmar defender for a screen as the sophomore wing fired from 15 feet up the slot.

It was all MBA now. Tony Schultz backhanded in the insurance goal (his 22nd) at 7:30 just as the Storm came off a powerplay.

Storm goalie Mitchell Grunig (1.5 goals against) had 17 saves against the Section 4A foes. Reed made 28 stops.

MBA (15-1) is enjoying its best season in the program's short history. Coming in, the Storm was riding their second 7-game winning streak of the season -- stretches that sandwiched the Storms' only loss, 3-2 to St. Michael-Albertville at the Little Falls Tournament.

Willmar (5-12) has lost three straight since its five-goal comeback to beat Sartell.
