Bob Newhart has been a fixture in comedy for nearly half a century. Some of his accomplishments include:

* Appearing in 14 feature films, including "In and Out" and "Catch 22."

* Providing the voice of characters for major animated movies.

* An Emmy and Peabody Award for the "Bob Newhart Variety Show," which was followed by the hugely popular "The Bob Newhart Show" (1972-78) and "Newhart" (1982-90).

* Grammy winner for his 1960 comedy album, "The Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart" that was number one on the charts and set Billboard sales records that stood for many decades. His album is still ranked as the 20th best selling album of all time, according to Billboard.

* Recurring appearances as Morty in ABC's "Desperate Housewives" TV show.

* Recent release on DVD of the first and second seasons of "The Bob Newhart Show."

* An Emmy nomination for his role in "Elf."

* In 2005, PBS featured Newhart in an "American Masters" presentation.
