Softball: Paynesville repels ACGC bid in seventh inning, 3-2

PAYNESVILLE -- Karissa Utsch collected the winning hit for Paynesville with a two-run double in the third inning as the Bulldogs fended off Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City 3-2 in a non-conference game Friday.

Ashley Schmeling scored in the first inning on an error to give ACGC (5-12) a quick 1-0 lead before Paynesville (12-8) answered in the bottom half of the frame when Jess Engler hit a fielder's choice that brought in Laura Schaefer.

Engler worked all seven innings, striking out six and surrendering nine hits to pick up the win.

ACGC had the bases loaded in the seventh with only one out, but Paynesville left fielder Chelsea Kalkbrenner threw out a runner at the plate before Engler ended the game with a strikeout.

At Granite Falls, the Blackjacks scored in every inning but the third. Chelsie Kurtenbach tripled and scored three times for Dawson-Boyd. The win went to Kristin Nevins, who threw a seven-hitter with no walks. Emma Volstad drove in a pair of runs for Yellow Medicine East and losing pitcher Ashley Vikander had a double as did Mel Anderson.

Dawson-Boyd completed its second sweep in two days helped by a six-run fifth inning. Tiffany Viessman doubled twice and singled to lead an 11-hit attack inflated by eight Sting errors. Amanda Jenson got the win withstanding 15 YME hits but walking just one.

The Sting's Kristin Hegna went 3-for-4 with a triple and Audrey Formo knocked in three runs with a triple and two singles.

RCW 10, Redwood Valley 9

Katie Steffen launched a three-run triple in the fifth inning to start a seven-run Renville County West rally that overcame a 9-3 Redwood Valley lead. Steffen came home on a Shannon Wensauer single to make it 9-7 and the Jaguars scored three more runs in the sixth to pull in front.

Megan Groen led the RCW offense with three hits. Both pitcher's gave up 14 hits. RCW's pitcher Jen Hamre also survived six Jaguar errors.

Both runs scored in th etop of the seventh. Brandi Bodin walked, stole second, went to third on Christine Condon's bunt single and scored on a wild pitch. Condon also came around to score on a wild pitch.

Condon and Tory Brouwer had two hits each.
