Willmar shifts offensive gears
WILLMAR -- Hot bats can make this game look easy. The Willmar Cardinals banged out 10 hits to sail by Mound-Westonka 8-0 Tuesday evening at Bill Taunton Stadium.
The 10 hits were two more than the Cardinals had all day Saturday when they split two Section 2AAA games on Baker Field.
Willmar (14-8) gets another home game Thursday when the Cardinals host New Ulm at 5 p.m. The Eagles ousted Buffalo 5-4 Tuesday.
Willmar cleanup hitter Matt Seehusen continued to hit the ball hard Tuesday as the junior designated hitter doubled and singled to drive in three runs. He belted a three-run homer run in Saturday's second-round loss to Mankato West.
Ross Van Hauen and Kyle Townswick also added a pair of hits each. George Jacobson put down a perfect suicide squeeze bunt to score Seehusen with the Cardinals' first run.
Troy Ditterich set the White Hawks (10-12) down on four hits over six innings for the win. The senior right-hander didn't walk or strike out a batter. Alex Lotthammer relieved and got the side in order in the seventh.
Willmar executed three double plays. Third baseman Van Hauen started two of those, one after leaping to snare a Nick Rettke line drive, then throwing to first to catch Kyle Goodfellow off the bag. He also threw to catcher Tom Prunty to nail Eddie Kutz, the losing pitcher, trying to score on a ground ball in the second.
