Willmar edged by Brainerd in ninth

BRAINERD -- After three postponements, Willmar finally got on the baseball diamond Tuesday.

But the Cardinals bowed 8-7 in nine innings to Brainerd in a Central Lakes Conference game.

Willmar scored six runs in the sixth for a 6-4 lead and one in the top of the ninth for a 7-6 advantage. Each time, though, the Warriors rebounded.

"It would have been nice to win the opener but I'm proud of the kids," said Willmar coach Brad Dean. "We hung in there. Our infield played solid. We had some miscues in the outfield, but overall it was a fun game."

Down 4-0, Willmar scored six in the sixth on three hits and three hit batters, each with the bases loaded. Jordan Smith, Michael Dunham and Kyle Townswick had the hits. Townswick drove in two runs.

Matt Seehusen put Wilmar up 7-6 in the ninth. He singled, stole second and then third and sped home on the catcher's overthrow.

But Nick Jelacie's third hit of the game drove in the tying and winning runs with one out in the ninth off Alex Malmgren, the third Willmar pitcher.

Brainerd had got started the day before losing 3-2 to St. Cloud Apollo. Willmar opens at home at 5 p.m. Thursday against Apollo.
