OLIVIA -- Joan Marie Toren, 64, of Olivia died Sunday at the Renville County Hospital in Olivia.
The service will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Olivia. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Dirks-Blem Funeral Home in Olivia, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., and from 9:15 to 10:15 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorials are preferred to Renville County Hospice.
She was born July 9, 1942, in rural Olivia to William and Julia (Dobmeier) Steffel. She attended rural School District 68 for four years, followed by four years at St. Aloysius Catholic School and graduated as salutatorian from Olivia High School in 1960. She attended the University of Minnesota for two years.
On Dec. 29, 1962, she married Richard Toren at Fort Walton Beach, Florida, where he was stationed. They lived in Florida; Anchorage, Alaska; Colorado Springs, Colo.; and Germany. After Richard's retirement from the U.S. Air Force, they returned to Olivia. She worked for the Olivia School District for 17 years as a paraprofessional.
She was involved in Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, was a religion teacher and assisted with community plays and was active in St. Aloysius CCW. She was a 20-year cancer survivor and was a team captain for Relay for Life for many years and was the speaker at the 2006 gathering.
She is survived by her husband; children: Debbie (and James) Gerrety of Bird Island, Rick (and Ann) Toren of Cold Spring, Rob (and Heidi) Toren of Chantilly, Va., and Deanna (and Matthew) Knight of Olivia; 13 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; her mother of Olivia; brothers: Bill (and Barb) Steffel of Olivia, Gerald (and Jan) Steffel of Maplewood and David (and Nancy) Steffel of Plano, Texas.
She was preceded in death by her father and one sister.
