Baseball: Kampsen homers twice as Paynesville tumbles NLS

REGAL -- Shane Kampsen ignited Paynesville's potent offense Tuesday with two home runs that knocked in four runs as the Bulldogs tripped up New London-Spicer 13-6 in a West Central North Conference baseball game.

Kampsen launched a three-run homer in a five-run second inning and hit a solo blast in the fourth before driving in another run with a fielder's choice in the fifth.

NLS (0-4, 0-4) had chipped away at Paynesville's lead before tying the game at 6-6 in the fourth on Sam Steffl's two-run single, but the Bulldogs (3-1, 4-1) scored four times in the fifth to pull away. Alex Naujokas singled in Ben Moser with the go-ahead run and Chuck Mackedanz added a two-run single.

Scott Hjelle hit a two-run single in the second and drew a bases-loaded walk in the third, as did Skylar Wachter, for the Wildcats.

MACCRAY 10, Dawson-Boyd 8

Caleb Hanson scored on an error and Jordan Smith singled in Justin Koenen in the eighth inning to help MACCRAY stay unbeaten.

Koenen then retired all three batters he faced in the bottom half of the inning for the save. Smith worked the first five innings and gave up one run but did not allow a hit. Reliever Ben Ruter ended up getting credit for the win despite allowing seven runs in two innings as Dawson-Boyd eventually tied the game, then lost it in the eighth.

Dawson-Boyd had a chance to upset the Wolverines after plating five runs in the seventh, but MACCRAY left fielder Adam Rambow threw out a Dawson-Boyd base runner to end the inning.
