Baseball: Smith homers twice as Willmar outslugs Worthington

WORTHINGTON -- In a score more suitable for a football game, Willmar pounded Worthington 20-10 Friday in a non-conference baseball game behind a 5-for-5 performance from sophomore Jordan Smith.

The Cardinals (5-8) erupted for 12 runs in the fifth inning that was highlighted by Smith's grand slam. Willmar collected nine hits in the inning after sending up 17 batters to the plate.

"We were pretty flat at the beginning," said Willmar coach Brad Dean. "That inning was drastically needed because we didn't have a spark.

"After giving up eight runs (in the third) we could have given up, but we didn't."

Smith also slugged a solo home run in the fourth and singled in two runs in the sixth to cap the scoring.

Kyle Townswick and Griffin Leitch both had three hits and Justin Schwieger supplied two more for the Cardinals.

Willmar has the weekend off as it will play four games over a four-day span next week.
