Broadband project teeters on brink; Kandiyohi County officials still hopeful

WILLMAR -- Elvern Arlin Braaten, 85, of Willmar, died Friday at Bethesda Pleasantview Nursing Home in Willmar.

The service will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Kerkhoven Lutheran Church. Burial will be at Hillside Cemetery.

Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar and one hour before the service Tuesday at the church.

He was born April 28, 1923, in Glenwood to Hans and Anne (Ellingson) Braaten. The family moved to the Sunburg area when Elvern was 10, and he attended District 23 School and graduated from Kerkhoven High School. He continued his education at a business college in Minneapolis, returning home to help his father on the farm during World War II.

He married Blanche Netland on Sept. 29, 1944, at Sunburg. They lived and farmed in Arctander Township for 75 years. Blanche died on Sept. 7, 2004, and Elvern moved into Willmar.

He was a member of Kerkhoven Lutheran Church and served on the church council, building and call committees. He was a member of the Sons of Norway, senior citizens and served as a senior companion.

He is survived by his children: Judy (and Gene) Halverson of Sunburg, David (and Susan) Braaten of Sunburg, Dennis (and Pat) Braaten of Litchfield, and Leon (and Kim) Braaten of Sunburg; 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one sister: Inora Westheim of Sunburg.

He was preceded in death by his wife.
