Public works director says 'mall road' work going well

WILLMAR -- Construction of Fifth Street Southeast, also known as "mall road," is under way in southeast Willmar.

The street is being constructed just east of the Kandi Mall parking lot between a point 600 feet south of Willmar Avenue to 19th Avenue Southeast.

"The mall road is going very well,'' Public Works Director Mel Odens said. He said Duininck Bros. of Prinsburg removed the existing bituminous last week and Quam Construction of Willmar will be constructing the water mains.

After the water mains are installed, the sanitary sewer will be installed and grading of the roadway will begin. Odens hopes the street will be open by early November.

"That's going to be a good connection for that second-tier development,'' Odens said.

Construction and reconstruction of other city streets is proceeding as part of the 2008 improvement program.

Third Street Southeast and Fourth Street Southeast are being rebuilt this year between Minnesota Avenue and Becker Avenue. Both streets are 67 years old.

On Third Street, underground utility work is completed. The street will be graded and graveled this week, and construction of curb and gutter will be finished by the end of this week or next week. Paving is scheduled by the end of next week.

Removal of the old pavement on Fourth Street began Sept. 12. The first layer of bituminous will be built during the first week of October.

The bituminous surface was milled off a section of 15th Street Southwest between Richland Avenue and 19th Avenue in a mill-and-overlay project. The street was cleaned and prepared for the overlay Monday.

The second layer of bituminous was to be laid on the newly constructed section of 15th Street Southwest from a point 1,365 feet south of 19th Avenue to 28th Avenue.

Odens said the 15th Street project took about a week longer than anticipated because more work was involved than with typical street construction. Work will be done toward the end of the week on 15th Street driveway entrances.

Work is nearly complete on reconstruction of 26th Avenue Southwest from Sixth Street to Eighth Street. Boulevard restoration and driveway work remain. The final lift of bituminous will be laid next year.

The Willmar Avenue Southwest extension between state Highway 40 and County Road 5 will be paved this fall. The avenue was extended through the new industrial park.

Grading is completed for streets and underground utility work at the Westwind Estates Third Addition housing project.
