BELGRADE -- Two Litchfield men were unhurt after the landing gear of their airplane hit some soft snow and caused the airplane to flip in a field about a mile north of Belgrade on Saturday morning, the Stearns County Sheriff's Office reported.

The pilot, Eric Allen Doering, 27, said he and his father, Ray Allen Doering, 58, who was a passenger, were trying to land in their field, approximately 1½ miles east of U.S. Highway 71, when the accident occured at 10:45 a.m.

A sheriff's deputy and several unidentified snowmobilers discovered that no one was injured. The pilot and passenger were brought to County Road 14 by the snowmobilers. There was minimal damage to the plane. The pilot said he had made several other field landings Saturday without any problems. He also said he had landed at this location in the past.

The sheriff's office called the Federal Aviation Administration and the plane was cleared to be removed from the accident site to the hangar of the owners. The FAA will inspect the plane at that location, the sheriff's office said.

The sheriff's office said Jim Schoenberg of Belgrade, a local farmer who lives on County Road 14, volunteered his services by using his tractor with a rotary snow blower to make a road across the field to gain access to the accident site.
