Proposal made to consolidate Stearns and Benton plus parts of Sherberne counties into 'Lake Wobegon County'

Three central Minnesota lawmakers have introduced a bill to combine all of Stearns and Benton counties plus the St. Cloud portion and Haven Township of Sherburne County into one new Minnesota county.

The bill announced today by Sen. Tarryl Clark, DFL-St. Cloud; Rep. Larry Haws, DFL-St. Cloud and Rep. Larry Hosch, DFL-St. Joseph.

The new county, conceptually entitled "Lake Wobegon County," would streamline and enhance services for citizens in the central Minnesota region of St. Cloud.

The St. Cloud region is currently governed by "three counties in one city, two counties in another city and 47 different jurisdictions within a 30-mile radius," Clark said.

An April 4 meeting is scheduled to begin discussion of this county consolidation concept. The meeting will be held at Noon April 4 at the Whitney Senior Center in Saint Cloud.
