Crash kills Colorado woman and critically injures Bird Island man

OLIVIA - A 34-year old Colorado woman was killed and a Bird Island man was critically injured Thursday afternoon in a two-vehicle crash south of Olivia.

Jennifer Hengel, a 1992 graduate of the MACCRAY School District who was living in Colorado Springs, Colo. was killed.

Her 2003 Dodge Stratus collided with a 2002 Freightliner semi driven by Gordon Sing, 61, of Bird Island. Sing was critically injured.

Hengel was going east on Renville County Road 4. Sing was traveling south on U.S. Highway 71 with a semi loaded with ground feed for Farm Service Elevator of Willmar.

The vehicles collided at the intersection around 1:15 p.m. Thursday, according to the State Patrol.

Sing was taken to the Redwood Falls Hospital and then air-lifted to North Memorial Medical Center.

There were no passengers in either vehicle.

The Olivia Police Department and Renville County Sheriff's Department assisted the State Patrol at the scene of the accident.
