Highway, bridge projects totaling $1.4B set in District 8

WILLMAR -- The Minnesota Department of Transportation announced this week a list of 223 state highway and bridge projects that will be completed this year.

The projects have a combined construction cost of $1.4 billion.

There are 14 projects in District 8, headquartered in Willmar, with a total construction cost of $26 million.

Some of those projects are minor, such as the $27,000 addition of warning flashers and lighting on state Highway 23 in Chippewa County and a $261,614 bridge desk repair on U.S. Highway 12 east of Kerkhoven.

Other projects are significant, such as the $2.4 million overlay of state Highway 4 from Cosmos to Grove City and a $5 million project for grading, bituminous and concrete surfacing and lighting on U.S. Highway 212 from Renville to Danube.

An additional three projects in the district will be funded through $16.9 million in stimulus money that's part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Those projects include a $13.7 million project to apply a concrete overlay on state Highway 7 from Montevideo to Clara City, a $1.1 million bituminous mill and overlay on Highway 23 north of New London and a $2 million bituminous mill and overlay project on state Highway 68 from Milroy to Wabasso.

"Over the last six years we've moved forward with more highway construction than in any other comparable period in Minnesota's history," said Gov. Tim Pawlenty.

Transportation Commissioner Tom Sorel said MnDOT is "committed to mobilizing our workers, our contractors and our partners to ensure that Minnesota's transportation dollars are spent efficiently and effectively."

Sorel said maintenance on state roads will also be increased to improve existing highway infrastructure.
