Echo mandies in two-vehicle crash

SACRED HEART -- The Renville County Sheriff's Office said Michael Scott Ose of Echo died from injuries suffered in a two-vehicle crash at 10:40 a.m. Thursday at the intersection of Renville County Road 12 and 840th Avenue, approximately 1½ miles northeast of Sacred Heart.

A 1998 Dodge Dakota pickup driven by Kyle Wade Aalderks of Renville was traveling east on 840th Avenue. The sheriff's office said the pickup entered the intersection of County Road 12 and struck the side of the 2001 Ford Explore driven by Ose and traveling north on County Road 12.

Aalderks was transported to the Granite Falls Hospital by Granite Falls Ambulance Service, and was treated and released.

Ose was airlifted to North Memorial Medical Center. He later died while in surgery.

Units responding to the crash were the sheriff's office, Sacred Heart Fire Department, Renville Fire Department, Sacred Heart Shirt Team, Renville and Granite Falls Ambulance Services, North Memorial Air Care and Minnesota State Patrol.

Gas leak

EDEN VALLEY -- The Meeker County Sheriff's Office and the Eden Valley Fire Department were called at 9:18 p.m. Thursday to investigate a gas odor coming from an area near a vacant house at 189 Park Ave. W. in Eden Valley.

Fire personnel verified that all valves had been shut down to the home, but technicians from CenterPoint Energy located a leak in a T-joint of the gas line near the address.

The sheriff's office said technicians advised area residents they would continue to smell the odor until the leak is repaired. They also advised the leak is not harmful or dangerous.

- Gilberto Reyes III, 25, of Willmar pleaded guilty Friday afternoon to two felony first-degree drug sale charges. Judge Donald Spilseth set sentencing for mid-July. A jury trial for Reyes had previously been scheduled for next Tuesday.

Reyes is the last of five Willmar residents to be sentenced on charges of selling cocaine to a CEE-VI Drug Task Force informant on multiple occasions between Aug. 1 and Oct. 16, 2008.

Connie Crowell, Kandiyohi County first assistant county attorney, said the charges against Reyes involved seven drug sales.

"We're very pleased that we have finally wrapped this up and that the defendant took responsibly for what he'd done, seven sales out of that house,'' she said. "That is usually the tip of the iceberg. What we catch them at is just a portion of what they're really doing.''

Crowell said Reyes would probably be committed to the Commissioner of Corrections for 74 months. Reyes is presently free on $150,000 bond.

- Judge Donald Spilseth set bail at $70,000 for Derrick Roy Jacobsen, 32, of Sleepy Eye, who made his initial appearance Friday morning on a charge of third-degree assault. He did not enter a plea and another hearing is set for June 15. Jacobsen was being held at the Kandiyohi County Jail on May 17 when he allegedly struck another inmate in the left eye with his fist. The criminal complaint said Jacobsen hit the other inmate because the inmate called him a name.
