Litchfield teacher seeking DFL endorsement for District 18B House seat

LITCHFIELD -- Darrin Anderson has declared his candidacy for the District 18B seat in the Minnesota House.

Anderson, a teacher and coach who lives in Litchfield, plans to seek the DFL endorsement. The District 18B seat is currently held by Republican Dean Urdahl.

Anderson said he was prompted to run for the Legislature by his concern over what he calls a "borrow and spend" ethic at the state Capitol.

"By using accounting shifts and gimmicks instead of finding real solutions to the state's long-term budget shortfall, we are putting our state's economy at stake and charging away our children's future. That has to stop, but it won't until we stop playing politics," he said in a statement announcing his candidacy.

Anderson said he will focus on the budget shortfall, education and economic development.

Anderson teaches social studies and special education in the Willmar School District and also coaches basketball in Willmar. He also has taught as an adjunct professor at St. Cloud State University. He and his wife, Holly Schultz-Anderson, live in Litchfield.

A native of Starbuck, he grew up on a family crop and exotic game farm near Starbuck. At age 3 he lost his right hand to a bite from a caged bear and had to undergo multiple reconstructive surgeries.

Anderson said the experience made him stronger and taught him lessons that will help him be an advocate at the state Capitol.

District 18B covers most of Meeker County and western Wright County. It includes the cities of Litchfield, Dassel, Darwin, Kingston, Grove City, Eden Valley, Watkins and Cosmos in Meeker County and Annandale, Cokato, South Haven and Howard Lake in Wright County.
