Multiple vehicles hit the ditch in holiday storm

WILLMAR -- The Kandiyohi County Sheriff's Department and Willmar Police Department responded to numerous reports of vehicles in the ditch over the Christmas holiday weekend.

There were no injuries reported.

The first reports started coming in around 9:30 a.m. on Christmas Eve Day and by 4:30 there had been at least six reports of vehicles in the ditch. By Sunday afternoon there were at least 25 reports of vehicles that had gone in the ditch during the long holiday. There were also several property damage accidents.

A 22-year old Willmar man was arrested after he almost caused a Willmar city snow plow to go in the ditch.That incident was reported at 7:09 a.m. on Christmas Day on Southwest 11th Street and Trott Avenue.

The driver of the snow plow told police the Blazer driven by the man went into the ditch after it nearly caused the snowplow to be driven off the road, according to the preliminary report. The man was later found walking on Kandiyohi Avenue and was arrested for careless driving, no Minnesota driver's license and no proof of insurance.

Holiday road rage

WILLMAR -- An incident involving two vehicles on snowy roads Saturday afternoon resulted in road rage that involved the display of a gun.

According to the preliminary report, a 33-year old Starbuck man told police that he was driving on Northeast Highway 9 near 52nd Street when a truck with a snow plow passed him and almost struck his jeep.

Hand gestures were exchanged between the two drivers and then the truck stopped abruptly in the middle of the road, almost causing the jeep to rear-end the truck. The truck driver reportedly got out of the vehicle and began pounding on the back of the jeep. The driver of the jeep, who told police he has a permit to carry a concealed weapon, then took out a gun at that point and the truck driver left.

Home alone

WILLMAR -- Willmar police responded to a report on Christmas Even that a two-year old child was locked inside a house.

The incident was reported at 6:47 p.m. Thursday in the 1800 block of Southeast Seventh Avenue.

Assistance was provided to unlock the door to the home.


WILLMAR -- A 50-year old man was arrested Saturday afternoon for allegedly stealing a pair of shoes from JC Penny in the Kandi Mall. The man said he was hitchhiking from Rapid City, S.D. to Duluth. He is being held in the Kandiyohi County jail pending a court appearance.

WILLMAR -- A 48-year old woman was cited for shoplifting at the Super Walmart and her 18-year old son was cited for disorderly conduct after he was reportedly acting "rowdy" and "spitting on people."

Police also responded to a report of an "out of control" shoplifter around 9 p.m. Saturday. The 32-year old man was cited for shoplifting, disorderly conduct and fifth degree assault.

WILLMAR - The hatchery office at a Willmar Poultry Farm in the 8000 block of Northeast County Road 9 was broken into over the weekend. The report was filed with the sheriff's department at 7:55 a.m. Sunday.

Bad holiday cooking

SPICER -- A Christmas Eve turkey is blamed for setting off the fire alarm in the 12000 block of Indian Beach Road. A preliminary call to the fire department was cancelled.

Burned food was also blamed for a fire call at 2 a.m. Saturday in the 300 block of Southwest Fourth Street in Willmar.

Car fire

SUNBURG -- The Sunburg Fire Department responded to a vehicle fire at 12:08 p.m. Sunday at a farm in the 20000 block of Northwest 121 Street.
