Beef Quality Assurance class scheduled at University of Minnesota

ST. PAUL -- Minnesota beef and dairy producers will learn how effective quality assurance strategies can improve profit potential from their cattle and calves at a Beef Quality Assurance training session at the University of Minnesota. The program will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Jan. 15 in 125 Andrew Boss Laboratory of Meat Science at the St. Paul campus.

The program which qualifies producers for Beef Quality Assurance certification will highlight best management practices including responsible animal health product use to avoid residues, prevention of injection site damage, biosecurity, responsible animal handling, feedstuffs management, record keeping and an update on beef industry issues.

Presentations will be conducted by University of Minnesota and Agricultural Utilization Research Institute presenters as well as Minnesota Beef Council staff. There is no charge for the training program, but participants are asked to reserve space in advance by calling the Minnesota Beef Council at 952-854-6980.

The Minnesota Beef Quality Assurance program is funded through the Beef Checkoff. The Beef Council funds promotion, research and educational activities on behalf of Minnesota's beef and dairy producers.

Dairy princess candidates sought

WILLMAR -- The American Dairy Association of Kandiyohi County is seeking candidates for the 2010 dairy princess program. Dairy princesses serve as goodwill ambassadors for the dairy industry by appearing at various promotional events and speaking to consumers and the media.

The annual banquet and coronation will be at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 20 at the Kandi Entertainment Center.

Candidates must be a high school graduate by July 1 and not yet 24 years old by July 1, 2010. Parents or guardians must be actively involved in milk production, either as owners or employees of a dairy farm. County princesses are eligible to compete for the Princess Kay title.
