Poultry workshops set this month in Hutchinson, Lamberton
FAIRMONT -- University of Minnesota Extension and Rural Advantage are offering three poultry workshops for those who are currently producing poultry or for those that are interested in getting started. The sites include Hutchinson and Lamberton. There is a cost to attend and registration is necessary. There will be CDs with the information presented and further materials for each attendee.
The course will be geared toward farmers who are producing chickens in alternative settings such as: using portable structures on pasture, using a free-range system, using housing that allows amplified space for the birds, using little or no antibiotics, or those marketing direct to consumers or supplying local cooperatives, grocery stores and restaurants.
Growing demand by consumers for poultry produced in this manner and greater interest by smaller-scale farmers who seek to increase income and profitability have created the need for this type of workshop.
The Hutchinson workshop will be from 6:30 to 9 p.m. March 18 at the McLeod County Fairgrounds.
The Lamberton workshop will be from 1 to 4 p.m. March 19 at the Southwest Research and Outreach Center.
The speaker at both events will be Dr. Jacquie Jacobs from the University of Kentucky on poultry health and nutrition and other topics as requested by participants.
The registration fee is $10 and participants must RSVP by March 17.
