Power outage affects about 5,000 Willmar customers

WILLMAR -- A power outage blamed on a failed terminator caused a loss of electrical service to about 5,000 customers of Willmar Municipal Utilities this morning. The outage occurred at 6:20 a.m. A utility spokesman said power was restored at 6:36 a.m.

Jeff Kimpling, manager of electric services for the Municipal Utilities, said the outage was caused by the failure of a terminator, which connects an underground cable to a 69,000-volt overhead line located on the south side of the Highway 23 bypass and about half a mile west of Highway 71.

The terminator failure caused a loss of power to the downtown power plant and a loss of power to the six feeder lines that leave the plant. The outage affected customers around the city.

Kimpling said electrical service was restored after power was re-routed. Kimpling said the failed terminator will be replaced when dry weather conditions return.
