Crash near Watson causes diesel fuel spill

WATSON -- Between 100 to 150 gallons of diesel fuel were spilled after two-vehicle crash around 7:40 a.m. Saturday near Watson.

According to the Chippewa County Sheriff's office, the crash at the intersection of County Road 13 and 90th Avenue Northwest involved a 2003 Ford Expedition driven by David Kluempke of Melrose and a 2008 Chevy Sliverado driven by Leslie Envoldson of Montevideo. Envoldson's pickup was pulling a farm utility trailer with a fuel tank attached.

During the crash, the trailer and tank broke loose from the pickup and the tank overturned and came to rest in the middle of the county road. The fuel began leaking from the tank and the Watson and Montevideo fire departments were paged. All of the fuel in the tank was pumped out by personnel from the Montevideo Cenex.

The state duty officer and the MPCA were contacted and by 3:15 p.m. the cleanup was nearly completed. Officials estimated that between 100 to 150 gallons of fuel were lost.
