SPICER -- Six Canada geese were struck and killed by traffic Thursday evening as they attempted to cross Minnesota Highway 23 in Spicer. Witnesses reported to the Kandiyohi County Sheriff's Office that motorists were braking and swerving as they encountered the large gaggle of geese on the road shortly before 10 p.m.

It was the second time this week that geese have been hit and killed on a local highway. On Monday a driver hit a group of geese on North Business 71 in Willmar. Seven geese were killed and the vehicle sustained minor damage to its grille.

- Labaron Sentell Black, 31, of Willmar made a first appearance Friday for violating a no contact order after he sent a letter from jail to a victim of a domestic incident he was involved in.

The charge is a felony.

Black was initially charged with domestic abuse on July 11 and a no contact order was signed July 13. According to court records, Black wrote a letter last week to the female victim and put it in an envelope addressed to the woman.

The letter was intercepted by jail staff, copied, returned to the envelope and placed in the out-going mail. The letter allegedly told the victim not to appear at Black's court hearing and how she could avoid it.

Black has five previous convictions of domestic violence-related offenses, dating back to 2006.

Judge Kathryn Smith set unconditional bail for Black was set at $75,000. His next court appearance is Aug. 9.

- Pedro Garcia, 33, of Willmar, pleaded guilty Thursday to a felony charge of forgery and two charges of driving while under the influence.

As part of the plea agreement, nine other charges were dismissed.

The case is being turned over to Immigrants and Customs Enforcement.

According to court records, Pedro Garcia, who is also known as Carlos Ramone Ramos-Gomez, was arrested by Willmar Police on June 27 on DWI charges and taken to the Law Enforcement Center. An interpreter who was called in to assist with processing Garcia recognized him from a previous violation. When his fingerprints were put in the system they were matched with the name Carlos Ramone Ramos-Gomez, who had an active arrest warrant for another DWI case.

When asked what his "real" name was, Garcia admitted that he'd been arrested in 2008 and had used a false name at that time when he provided law enforcement with a Florida identification card.

- LeeAnn Mae Salcedo, 35, of Willmar, made a first court appearance Thursday for using a false name when applying for a marriage license last month.

She was charged with two felonies - perjury and forgery.

According to court records, she'd applied for a license June 29 at the Kandiyohi County Recorder's office using the name LeeAnn Mae Behrens and indicated on the application that she'd never been married before.

A search of her name, however, revealed she'd been married in 2004 and that her last name was Salcedo.

When questioned, Salcedo said she was divorced and was allowed to use her maiden name again.

When the recorder's office asked her to provide proof of the divorce, Salcedo returned with a divorce document for a LeeAnn Stillo, which led to the discovery that she had also been married in 1997.

Additional investigations revealed that Salcedo used the name LeeAnn Behrens to apply for a driver's license in 2010 and for another document in 2005.

Judge Kathryn Smith released Sakcedi on her own recognizance. Her next court appearance is Aug. 9.
