'Art' a beautiful piece of work

Up for a night of humor and thought?

Go see "Art" by Yasmena Reza and translated by Christopher Hampton during its run this week at The Little Theatre in New London.

Showing at 7:30 p.m. through Saturday and at 3 p.m. on Sunday, this play is one to put on the calendar. Buy your tickets early, it's sure to sell out.

Local director Nikki Bettcher Erickson brings this French/British import to our region. She saw the play on stage in London's West End and was so impressed that she carried the script around for the last 12 years. She shared, "It was a transformative experience to see this play." You may feel the same after seeing it.

In the play, actor Matt Schiller, as Serge, buys an expensive piece of modern art. He shows them the work, (and not to give away everything), it helps them address the concept of friendship, lost and unrequited love, death and more. Actors Tim Miller, Schiller and Dan Eggen provide entertaining antics and thoughtful dialogue. Eggen, as Yvan, with excellent timing, creative expressions and British accent reminds one of a young John Cleese.

Performed on apartment-like sets designed by Chris McAninch with lights and sound by Eric Harp, you will be fascinated by the themes that emerge.

What is art? What is true acceptance of a friend? How do we react to what your friends value ... especially when we do, or don't, see our reflection in them? Must friends rationalize why we are alike or different, and convince the other person to view things like we do? How do our age, experience and relationships change our thoughts, humor and judgments?

During this play, actors Miller, Schiller and Eggen will test your views with their humorous, thought-stirring dialogue.

Theater goers, don't miss out, this is a gem you should see!

A native of Michigan, Jamin Johnson has been attending plays since she was a child. She's seen everything from one-act plays on college campuses, to Broadway shows in New York, to theater in London. She loves the creative process and the people who make it possible for us to enjoy it.

Tickets are $12 for adults and $7 for students under 18. They are available at www.newlondonlittletheatre.
