Meeker sheriff warns of critical incident scam

LITCHFIELD -- At least two people in Meeker County have reported receiving phone calls from scammers posing as either hospital staff or others related to a critical incident, who say that a family member has been involved in an accident and are at a specific hospital.

Sheriff Jeff Norlin sent out a press release Thursday seeking to make the public aware of the scam. In each case, the resident is then asked to respond to the hospital immediately. In both of these cases, the residents took the proper course of action, which was to not respond to the hospital right away, verify the information and call the sheriff.

Anyone who receives this type of call is asked to do the same, and especially call the sheriff's office or your local police department right away. Dispatchers at the county emergency communications center can assist in verifying if the call is real, and a deputy or officer can respond, check the area and gather additional information from you. It may be just a prank call, or worse, a potential thief waiting for you to leave your house unoccupied for a known period of time to commit a burglary.
