Fire destroys garage

ATWATER -- A garage was destroyed in an early-morning fire Saturday in Atwater.

The Atwater Fire Department responded to the blaze, at 13760 East First Ave, at 2:20 a.m.

Fire Chief Gerald Schwartz said the wooden structure was "fully engulfed" in flames when crews arrived.

Because the building was about 12 feet away from the house, Schwartz said crews sprayed water on the home to prevent flames from spreading.

The garage and its contents were a total loss, said Schwartz. There were no vehicles in the building, but a number of lawn and garden tools, like lawn mowers and tillers that were stored in the garage were destroyed.

Schwartz said it's unknown how the blaze started.

Crews were on the scene for about two hours.

The Kandiyohi Fire Department assisted at the fire by providing a tanker.
