District Court

Kandiyohi County

- Labaron Sentell Black, 31, of Willmar, was sentenced Thursday to 21 months in prison on a felony charge of domestic assault for assaulting a woman in July.

He was also ordered to pay a $1,500 fine with his prison earnings and was given credit for 116 days already served in jail

As part of a plea agreement, a misdemeanor theft charge in the case and a felony for violating a no-contact order were dismissed.

The first set of charges was filed after Willmar police were called around 7:15 p.m. July 11 to an apartment in southeast Willmar on a domestic disturbance. A woman there reported she had let Black, with whom she had previously had a relationship, stay at the residence because he had nowhere else to go. She said he had called her derogatory names, attempted to choke her and repeatedly returned to the residence to continue to threaten her. She had bite marks on her arm and hand where he had bitten her in order to get her cell phone from her.

The violation of a no contact order charge was filed after he sent a letter from jail to an alleged victim of the domestic incident. According to court records, Black wrote a letter last week to the female and put it in an envelope addressed to the woman. The letter was intercepted by jail staff, copied, returned to the envelope and placed in the outgoing mail. The letter told the woman not to appear at Black's court hearing and how she could avoid it.

Black has five previous convictions of domestic violence-related offenses, dating back to 2006.
