YM Co. adopts social host ordinance

GRANITE FALLS -- Yellow Medicine County has joined the growing ranks of counties and municipalities adopting social host ordinances.

The board of commissioners on Tuesday unanimously approved a social host ordinance at its meeting, according to Ryan Krosch, county administrator. It allows for the prosecution of adults who host events where alcohol is provided to minors. The adults are subject to prosecution if they reasonably should know that alcohol was being served, or if they failed to take reasonable steps to prevent it from occurring.

A chemical health coalition in the county urged the commissioners to adopt the ordinance.

The county attorney's office supported the initiative and drafted the ordinance approved by the commissioners.

In other business, the commissioners indicated an interest in meeting with Redwood County to discuss the possibility of sharing services.

They also expressed interested in meeting with Redwood and Renville counties to discuss the possibility of combining recycling programs, and a proposal to look again at the possibility of a waste-to-energy project.
