Habitat to auction three of its homes in Montevideo

MONTEVIDEO -- Habitat for Humanity will be placing three of its homes in Montevideo for sale at auction in March, the West Central Minnesota board of directors has decided.

"(The) time has come that these assets no longer promote the mission of Habitat and hinder the ability to help families in need in other ways,'' Joline Hovland, executive director, said Monday in a news release.

The chapter sought for the past two years to find families to purchase the Habitat homes located on McKinley and Eighth Streets in Montevideo without success. Last fall, a Habitat home on Ridgeview Drive also came back.

Only a few families applied for the homes, and those that did were not able to partner with Habitat for Humanity, according to the organization.

Habitat for Humanity has seven homes in the Montevideo home that are occupied and doing well. The local affiliate also continues to work with Clean Up our River Environment to find an eligible family for the Hill Grocery house constructed in partnership with the Montevideo Senior High School and local businesses. Its showcases a variety of energy conservation features.

Habitat for Humanity also announced it will work with John Worden to introduce the Brush with Kindness program. Wogen, a University of Minnesota student with Montevideo ties, is interested in helping low-income homeowners fix up the exterior of their homes and yards.

He will be recruiting U of M students to come to Montevideo to work on home projects this spring and early summer. Henslin Auctioneers will be handling the March sale of the homes.
