- Jordan Dean DeGrote, 19, of Raymond, pleaded guilty Tuesday to a felony charge of fleeing a peace officer for fleeing from a sheriff's deputy at speeds of 75 mph on gravel and dirt roads.

As part of a plea agreement, lesser charges of driving without a valid license, reckless driving and failure to stop at a stop sign will be dismissed. He will be sentenced April 18.

According to the complaint, a deputy was on routine patrol around 2:30 p.m. Nov. 2 in Raymond. As the deputy was conducting speed checks, he saw a vehicle driven by DeGrote, and the deputy knew DeGrote was driving without a valid license.

The vehicle accelerated from a stop sign at a high rate of speed and the officer pursued it onto 105th Avenue. Speeds on the gravel road reached 75 mph and the pursuit continued onto a deeply rutted and muddy field road. The deputy discontinued the pursuit, but went to a Raymond residence where he suspected he would find DeGrote.

A citizen reported a person, matching DeGrote's description, had parked a car, which matched the one the deputy pursued, and ran away from a nearby location. Meanwhile, the deputy saw another car, driven by a young man known to associate with DeGrote, drive up. The young man and DeGrote got out of the car and the deputy approached DeGrote and arrested him. The keys in his pocket started the vehicle involved in the pursuit, which smelled of hot brakes and hot oil.

- Matthew Alan Schorn, 21, of Willmar, made his first appearance Tuesday on a felony charge of domestic assault by strangulation for allegedly choking a woman.

Unconditional bail was set at $20,000 with conditional bail allowed for $5,000. His next appearance is Feb. 22.

According to the complaint, Willmar police were called on Sunday to a domestic incident at a home in the northwest quadrant of the city. A woman, who was on the phone with Schorn, gave the phone to officers. Schorn allegedly admitted to choking the woman. He was later arrested at that residence.

The woman told officers they had been at a bar in Paynesville and that he was jealous because of who she danced with. He allegedly choked her twice on the drive back to Willmar.

- Matthew Lee-Cortez Lewis, 23, of Spicer, pleaded guilty and was sentenced Tuesday on a misdemeanor charge of theft.

He was sentenced to 90 days in jail, with 87 days stayed and credit for three days served, a $1,000 fine with $900 stayed for a year, and a year of probation. He was ordered to pay $200 in restitution.

As part of a plea agreement, a third-degree drug sale charge was dismissed.

The charges were filed after a CEE-VI Drug Task Force informant arranged to buy 10 40-mg Oxycodone pills from Lewis on Oct. 13 at a Willmar location. The informant was given $200 in task force funds. He gave the money to Lewis, who then left the location and traveled into an apartment complex on the southwest side of the city. The informant attempted to contact him via cell phone, but was unable to connect with him. The informant was searched by agents, and no money was located on him. Oxycodone is a Schedule II controlled substance.
