Waite Park man not hurt, pickup drops through ice on Pearl Lake

KIMBALL -- A 42-year-old Waite Park man escaped through the driver side window of his pickup, which broke through the ice Friday on Pearl Lake in Stearns County.

According to the Stearns County Sheriff's Office, Bryan Spychala was driving a 2004 one-ton Chevy on a previously plowed road on the lake when the front end of the truck broke through the ice and water began entering the cab area.

The weak spot in the ice where the truck went through may have been caused by an ice house that was moved.

The Sheriff's Office reminds citizens that spring time is coming, the ice is thinning and urges people to use caution and common sense when going on to the ice.

- A felony charge for malicious punishment of a child against Nathan Wade Albrecht, 33, of Willmar, was dismissed Feb. 18 by the county attorney's office.

The dismissal notes only that "upon further investigation" the charge is dismissed.

The charge was filed after Willmar police were called around 5:30 p.m. Feb. 4 to a home in the southwest quadrant of the city. A woman there reported that she and Albrecht had had an argument and that he had grabbed the arm of a child, age 3, and twisted it. The woman sought medical attention for the child and the medical personnel noted the child had bruising on the arm.
