Mix of rain, sleet, snow expected in west central Minnesota tonight and Tuesday

Another significant weather system will begin impacting the area tonight, with rain and thunderstorms expected to spread north out of Iowa and into Minnesota and Wisconsin, according to the National Weather Service.

West central Minnesota is in the hazardous weather outlook area, meaning some rain, sleet or snow can be expected.

There is a chance of heavy rainfall tonight across southern Minnesota, which could increase flooding dangers. The counties of Chippewa, Lac qui Parle, Redwood, Renville, Yellow Medicine are currently under flood warnings, along with many other river communities in the state.

During the afternoon Tuesday, a wintry mix of freezing rain, sleet, and snow will begin affecting central Minnesota into northwest Wisconsin.

In the evening Tuesday, a transition to heavy wet snow is expected. Final snowfall amounts will depend on when the transition occurs.

The Weather Service predicts for now that areas north of a line from Alexandria to Ladysmith, Wis., have the best chance at seeing 6 or more inches of snow.
