Heat warning in effect in central, southern Minn. until Wednesday evening

The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat warning for central and southern Minnesota that will remain in effect until 9 p.m. Wednesday.

The Weather Service said the afternoon heat index will exceed 105 degrees for several hours today and again on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon. Overnight lows will fall only to the mid-70s or lower 80s.

The high today is expected to reach the lower to middle 90s.

Heat and high humidity will combine to create a dangerous situation in which heat-related illnesses are likely. Individuals are advised to drink plenty of fluids, stay out of the sun, stay in an air-conditioned room and keep an eye on relatives, neighbors and pets.

When possible, strenuous outdoor activities should be rescheduled to early morning or the evening hours. To reduce the risk of heat-related illness for outdoor workers, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments.
