Islamic Society of Willmar, Minn., is potential Garfield buyer

WILLMAR -- The Islamic Society of Willmar made an offer on Aug. 9 to purchase the northern half of the Garfield School property in southwest Willmar.

The Willmar School Board announced the name of the potential buyer after an hour-long closed meeting this morning to discuss the offer. The name had not been disclosed before today.

School Board Vice Chairman Mike Reynolds said the board had discussed a counteroffer during the closed meeting and would send that to the Islamic Society. He said the school district will not disclose any details of the offer or counteroffer at this point.

The School Board will most likely discuss the potential sale again at its regular meeting on Sept. 12, Reynolds said.

The Islamic Society has been a tax exempt nonprofit organization since December 2006, according to the website It currently has a mosque at 410 Becker Ave. S.W. in downtown Willmar.
