Freeze warning issued, temperature to drop to 28 Wednesday night

WILLMAR -- The National Weather Service has issued a freeze warning for much of central and south central Minnesota for Wednesday evening into Thursday morning.

The Weather Service is expecting a low temperature of 28 degrees overnight in Willmar and low temps in the upper 20s and lower 30s for much of the region. The low temperature will be brought on by a strong Canadian high pressure system that will bring a clear sky, light winds and well below normal temperatures.

The low temperatures could kill crops and other sensitive vegetation. According to statistics from the Minnesota Climatology Working Group, the median date of the first 32-degree frost in Willmar is Oct. 3, the first 28-degree frost is Oct. 15 and the first 24-degree frost is Oct. 25.

The warning area includes Minnesota cities such as Albert Lea, Alexandria, Mankato, Mora, Montevideo, Redwood Falls, St. Cloud and the Twin Cities metro area. The warned area also includes Sioux Falls, Brookings and Huron, S.D.
